About the destination: Crescent City is the county seat and only incorporated city in Del Norte County, California. Named for the crescent-shaped stretch of sandy beach south of the city, Crescent City had a total population of 7,643 in the 2010 census, up from 4,006 in the 2000 census. The population includes inmates at Pelican Bay State Prison, also within the city limits, and the former census-designated place Crescent City North annexed to the city. The city is also the site of the Redwood National Park headquarters, as well as the historic Battery Point Light. Due to the richness of the local Pacific Ocean waters and the related catch, and ease of access, Crescent City Harbor serves as home port for numerous commercial fishing vessels. The city is located on the Pacific coast in the upper northwestern part of California, about 20 miles (32 km) south of the Oregon border. Crescent City's offshore geography makes it unusually susceptible to tsunamis.[12] Much of the city was destroyed by four tsunami waves generated by the Good Friday earthquake off Anchorage, Alaska in 1964. More recently, the city's harbor suffered extensive damage and destruction due to tsunamis generated by the March 11, 2011 earthquake off Sendai, Japan. Several dozen vessels and many of the docks they were moored to were destroyed as wave cycles related to the tsunamis exceeded 8 feet (2.4 m). Its climate is also very moderate, with very cool summers for its latitude as a result of intense maritime moderation. Nearby inland areas behind the mountains have significantly warmer summers.

About the destination: Mendocino (Spanish for "of Mendoza") is an unincorporated community in Mendocino County, California, United States. Mendocino is located 9.5 miles (15 km) south of Fort Bragg, at an elevation of 154 feet (47 m). The population of the census-designated place (CDP) was 894 at the 2010 census, up from 824 at the 2000 census. The town's name comes from Cape Mendocino, named by early Spanish navigators in honor of Antonio de Mendoza, Viceroy of New Spain. Despite its small size, the town's scenic location on a headland surrounded by the Pacific Ocean has made it extremely popular as an artists' colony and with vacationers. With its spectacular cliffs overlooking a metallic blue sea, this coastal village is a natural magnet for artists, romantics and lovers of the wild and rugged. As the closest point to the California town of New England, Mendocino allows you to stroll near beautiful old two-storey cottages wrapped in roses and wooden fences, and wind chimes ringing in the breeze. This tucked-away town wasn't always so charming and quiet: during the logging boom of the mid- to late 1800s, Mendocino was bustling with people and commerce, a thriving port full of saloons and bustling hotels. Now, luxurious accommodations welcome you and invite you to curl up by the fire; restaurants serve freshly caught seafood and local organic wines; and galleries showcase high-end art and crafts. Festivals are many and often celebrate the region's bounty, whether it's sweet Dungeness crab, craft beers or mushrooms in winter.
